In 1971, John Lennon expressed his vision of hope, peace, a world free of poverty, a world without countries or religions, through his powerful song “Imagine”. Lennon believed, “we are all one country, one world, one people”.

In the book Lennon in America, by Geoffrey Giuliano, Lennon himself commented that Imagine was an “anti-religious, anti-nationalistic, anti-conventional, anti-capitalistic [song], but because it’s sugar-coated, it’s accepted.”

Decades later, his lyrics continue to influence and inspire.

最近, 原油價格大幅度下跌, 跌了19% , 一心以為, 我們小市民應會得益, 分享到較便宜的汔油。誰想到, 汽油價格只下跌了5% 。

曾記否? 在不久以前, 毎當汽油價格上漲, 小市民斱知到, 週末又快開始了。當時油價的週期性, 是由星期日開始, 油價就會下降, 到星期三是最低點, 星期四開始回升, 至星期六最高價格, 週而復始, 油公司財源廣進。汽油價格, 大起大落, 比股票還利害。

這現象引起了輿論的注意, 大事評擊, 也引起政府關注, 要作出調查。但専家認為, 這只是商品社會自由競爭的必然現象。

後来, 油公司又改變政策, 油價的上落, 改為週末下降, 常日上漲, 公衆假期, 油價平平, 假期一過, 又大幅度上漲, 但油價的週期性仍在, 還是大起大落, 比美 Dow Jones/TSX 。

近年来, 又出現新招, 油公司聯盟, 劃一油價, 從萬錦到密士西加, 都是同一價格, 同起同落, 齊齊賺錢。

今天, 又有新現象, 原油大跌, 汽油價格却穩定不落。原油跌價19%, 美國紐約汔油相繼下跌16%, 但加拿大油價却只跌了5%。專家們又大發議論, 認為原油跌價, 是因為希臘引起的經濟危機, 再因加幣提升, 再加上夏天煉油昴貴, 至令加拿大汽油價格不跌云云。

安省國會議員 Dan McTeague 是加拿大油價權威。他的網頁 Tomorrow’s Gas Price Today (http://www.tomorrowsgaspricetoday.com/) 每天都登出明日的油價估計, 而且十分準確, 至令有人懐疑他和油公司有關係, 有內幕消息。其實他是用一條複雜的方程式, 来預測油價。他曾公開説明過他的方法: 汽油批發/貨架價格 (Gasoline Wholesale/Rack Price), 加上安省汔油税14.7 cents, 聯邦汔油税 10 cents, 和汔油零售商每公升七仙利潤 (mark up), 再加5% GST, 那就是明日油價。

據 McTeague 認為, 現在原油跌價, 汔油不動, 是油公司對小市民的欺騙, 作弊 (rip off) 。他發覺用他的方程式計算, 上市油價總是比估計油價貴了幾仙, 他美其名 Mystery Cents。在他的網頁登有各大城市油公司作弊列表 ( http://tomorrowsgaspricetoday.com/ripoff-chart.php) 。這是油公司人為的價格提高, 每公升多賺數仙, 利潤就非常可觀了。
