Nineteen Ancient Poems (VI)         anonymous

I gather lotus blooms wading through the stream
Fragrant plants fill the orchid swamp in sweet beam
To whom I wish to present this beautiful bouquet
My love who is roaming far away
Towards my old village I turn my eyes
The way back there is far and wide
In separation our hearts are same as one
In grief we will console each other till we grow old

Butterflies linger on flowers             Zhou Bang Yan (1056-1121)

The nesting birds are unsettling in bright moonlight
The water-clock is about to drip out the night
As the windlass lifts water from the Well of Gold
I wake suddenly to see your staring eyes so bright
Your pillow is wet with tears now cold

I grasp your hands as the frosty breeze lifts your hair in flow
I loath to leave
Fearing to hear you say adieu
When the Plough appears beyond the railing upstairs
I’ll be far from here in the cold of dews
Only the cock’s crow will remain with you

To My Ailing Horse   Du Fu (712-770)

You have followed my rein for so many years
Through snow and deep mountain passes we cheered
You have always trotted in good form where’er we go
Seeing you ill in your aging days I feel sorrow
Your coat and frame are not different from others your kind
‘Tis your loyalty to me that shines
This little gesture of appreciation is definitely not shallow
I’m moved to sing you my praise from my soul

Watching the Wilderness       Du Fu (712-770)

On this autumn day I see a boundless view
Layers of hills and trees loom in vivid hues
At a distance clean are the water and the sky
Hidden in deep mist a lone town stays from behind
Lingering leafs easily fall when swept by winds
Toward the mountain ranges a retiring sun plummets in
Why should a solitary crane returns to its nest late
When black craws have thronged the woods in haste

Recalling Our Flute Duet At Phoenix Terrace    Li Qing-zhao (1084-1156)

Cold incense resting in the censer in gold
I tossed in bed sleepless my quilt in waves of red folds
Idly I get up to comb my hair slow

Let dusts gather in my dresser full
Let the sun creeps up the drape closed

Seized by fears of parting and separation pain
A lot need be said
Words disappeared before they could be let

Recently I have lost much weight
Not due to excessive drinking
Nor because of autumn feeling

Be as it may be as it may
However we sing the parting song you will leave anyway
I’ll hold you dear however far you may stray
From my bower engulfed in haze

The stream near home its flow will continue
Standing witness of how I pine for you
Gazing in absence day after day
Where I fix my gaze
A new grief begins hence to stay

Tune:  Happy Events Are Near     Zhu Dun Ru (1081-1159)

Fisherman’s Song

I leave world affairs aside with a shake of head
Free to get drunk any time or choose to keep a clear head
Wearing a green-straw cloak I go to work as usual
And braving the chill of frost and snow is but habitual

Whence the wind lull my fishing line is idle
Up the sky and under water the crescent moon settles
The world a thousand li beams in the same silvery white
A lone swan appears and vanished in flight

Tune:  Buddhist Dancer       Wei Zhuang  (836-910)

Please get drunk tonight to drown your sorrows
Wine jar in hand speak not of tomorrow
I am grateful to you for this your kind advice
Your hospitality and wine are accepted with delight

Worry you may that spring is short as water-clock drips dictate
Complain not of full cups but take them in haste
Rejoice when in laughters wine comes your way
Happiness appears but sparingly you may say

The War Year             Cao Song (828-903)

The lush countryside has been marked for battles
People here can no longer work and live without sorrow
Tell me not of glories of generals and kings
A victor’s success is built on bones ten thousands soldiers stained

A Short Song      Cao Pi (186-226)

(To My Father)

I raise my eyes to see the screens
I lower my eyes his table is so clean
Everything is intact as before
Alas the master is here no more
All in a sudden his soul has flown
I am fatherless all alone
Who will I look up to lead me grow
I weep my tears incessantly flow
Deers bleat hither and yonder
They nurse the young they care
Birds fly here and there
They protect their young in the nest
I alone am desolate and in despair
Severed from a father I so revere
Deep in my heart my grief overflowed
A hurt no one but I can know
Behold the effects of change had been told
That sorrow makes us old
Behold how my hair is greying in haste
Is it not early for a man of my age
Loudly I wail and bleakly I sigh
To my father’s sudden decease I inquire
They say longevity favours those who are kind
Why should my father die
