To My Departed Wife
Translation by Paul Lee (1962)
Tune: Fisherman’s Pride
Autumn scene in the frontier looks extraordinary
Wild geese leave not a day too soon in a hurry
From all four corners bugles repeatedly roar
Walled in by peaks
The town gates are lowered before sun-fall
I hold a cup of unstrained wine knowing home is far away
Short of a clear victory any plan to return home is in sway
On frosty grounds foreign flutes tune only doleful says
No one could sleep
Seeing the general’s hair grey soldiers weep
Tune: Immortals By the River
Awake from my dream I find the tower locked tight
Heavy curtains hang low a sober sight
Whence last year’s spring sorrows visit and grow
Alone I stand amid flower buds unfold
In the drizzle a pair of swallows left leaving no trace to follow
I still remember when I first met lovely Ping
Her silk dress embroidered with two hearts locked in a ring
She played the pipa to sing her love for me
The moon was our witness
She brought home for me a cloud of such brilliance
Tune: Fisherman’s Pride
Small bridges linking smooth banks on the lap of hills
Sapphire water meanders through floral and grass mazes in a rill
Thatched cots stand around their windows so neat
No dust here
Vernal breezes sweep them away thither and hither
From my noonday noose I wake to hear birds sing
Their chirps loud like cocks crowing the dawn in
I realize in a flash people do pass away when old
‘Tis alright to have dreams to hold
They help me forget that one day I too have to go
Lunar New Year’s Day 江紹倫譯
On a sound of firecrackers we bid farewell to the year old
As vernal breezes warm up the Tu Su brew we welcome the new
The sun shines visiting thousands of family doors
Every door displays new couplets to celebrate the new year for all
Tune: Bells Drowned By Rain
Cicadas tuned dreary in the cold
We sojourned at the pavilion till the evening is old
Showers over
Under the city gate we drank in dull mood
Lingering
Your departing boat tooted
Hand in hand we gazed at each other in teary eyes
With congealed sobs words come not to say good bye
Ahead as you go
A thousand li of waves and mist lie
Clouds are heavy in the boundless southern sky
Those deep in love must suffer parting sorrow since days of old
Especially parting in the autumn cold
Where will I be after tonight when becoming sober
On banks of willows
Moon resigning in day-break breezes
With you away for years
All bright days and pleasing scenery here will exist in vain
If I should ever coquette in a thousand ways
To whom should I show my feelings anyway
Tune: Phoenix Perch on Parasol
I stand alone on the balcony in light breeze
To confront spring sorrows
Parting grief loom in the horizon a dark gleam
At sunset smoke rises where grass is green
With no word to tell who would know why on these rails I lean
‘Tis my intend to dare getting drunk in a wink
For cups of wine I sing
Strained mirth will relief not bring
I regret not my waist-band loosens as it must be
Languish I accept when it comes to loving thee
Tune: Eight Beats From Ganzhou Music
Against the incessant late showers river and sky stand
Awashed instantly autumn looks new again
Gradually fierce gales blow dreary and chill
Few souls stay by the hill or rill
In my lonely lodge only fading sunlight remains still
All vegetations green or red have withered
No more splendour
Only currents of the Yangtzi River
Flow steadily east silent as ever
I dare not ascend high to look far and around
In search of my native land lost where to be found
Homesickness abound
To my roving I sigh
Lingering here and there I know not why
My beloved must be watching from her bower with longing eyes
How oft had she mistaken a returning boat on horizon to be mine
Little would she know
I am also watching from this balcony rail
Pinning for her my heart frozen in sorrow
Tune: Butterfly Loves Flower
Orchids tear dews while asters in doleful misty grey
Silk curtains could not allay this cold
Pairing swallows take hasty leave
The moon could not know our parting grief
It shines till dawn its slanting light strayed into crimson windows
Western gales withered all green trees last night
Alone I ascended the tall tower
To search all the roads under the sky
How I wish to send you my darling a comforting message on ornate paper
Alas where would it go amid long mountain ranges and a boundless sea
Tune: Silky Sand Brook
I wrote a new poem and drank a cup of wine
In the old pavilion last year’s weather remained fine
When will you come back to celebrate the sun its ray decline
Helplessly I see flowers fade and fall
Delightful these swallows I seem to know visit again my wall
Round the fragrant path in my cosy garden I loiter alone
