To My Friend Yang From my Study Qian Qi(722-780) 江紹倫譯
Around my cottage a winding brook meanders
To my straw screen clouds leave their colours
Bamboos look affectionate when newly washed by rain
Hills love the sun in its setting splendour
Idle stocks roast in their places early before the eve
Autumn flowers here are slow to shed their leaves
My house boy has swept clean the overgrown path for thee
A dear old friend I earnestly waiting to see

From My Study at the Mouth of the Valley:
A Message to Censor Yang Qian Qi (Tang)
At my thatch hut by the stream in the vale —
Atop the vine-wall are born mist clouds frail;
After rain, bamboos are green with new gown;
The mountain range is lovely at sundown;
Cranes come early to rest under the bow’r;
Slow to fade are many an autumn flow’r —
My pupil has swept the grass trail with zest
For you, m’ friend, have promised to be my guest!
