70th Anniversary Wah Yan College, Kowloon Senior Branch in Austin Road, September 1941, the beginning…

With 140 students attending, the Senior Branch of Wah Yan College, Kowloon was opened on 8th September 1941, exactly seventy years ago, just to become derelict in a few months.  In residence were the headmaster, teacher and spiritual director Fr. Richard Gallagher, Fr. Patrick Joy, the Jesuit Superior of Hong Kong, Fr. Charles Daly, minister, procurator and teacher and finally the Scholastic Mr. Joseph McAsey who taught, in charge of the library and games.

It was hoped that Fr. Gallagher would bring to Kowloon the outstanding features of Wah Yan Hong Kong – a ‘happy school’ with good examination results, a good spirit among the boys, and a spirit of contentment and loyalty among the masters.  (Sources – Jesuits in Hong Kong, South China and Beyond , Thomas Morrissey, SJ;  The Star, Wah Yan College, HK School Magazine 1947;  Jesuits Under Fire in the Siege of Hong Kong, Thomas Ryan, SJ)

WYK in the 70’s

Have you ever wanted to flash back for a minute to see how the WYK campus looked like some 30 years ago? Consumer video recording was not popular at that time so footage on the school property can rarely be found. The following is a video clip showing the classroom and its settings (~ 1975) extracted from a scene of the movie “大家樂”. There are other scenes in the movie showing the canteen, library, the concourse, etc. Anyone who has a copy of the movie (most likely in VHS tape format) please click here and let us know, we’ll see if we can make a compilation of clips that will bring us back to WYK in the 70’s.

Funeral service for Damien Ku

Dear friends of Damien,

With profound saddness, we would like to let you know that KU Chi Chung, Damien passed away peacefully at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on 11 May 2011 at the age of 67 following a courageous battle with cancer.

The passing away of our beloved daddy/husband happened so quickly that it came as a shock to all of us. But we are also grateful to God that Damien has not suffered much and has been able to join hands peacefully with the angels to enter into God’s kindgom.
