In Search of Matteo Ricci
Splendid report, Paul. Thank you.
In Sept, I was in Venice. I went into a second-hand bookshop to ask if there were any books on Matteo Ricci. The answer, No. I found only a festschrift to an Italian sinologist, Lionello Lanciotti. I went to a coin and stamp shop in St Mark’s Square, and it had only got two stamps of Marco Polo. Then when we went to the civil hospital which was once the Scuola Grande di San Marco (to admire the architecture free), we saw some human-size cardboard cutouts of saintly figures in the lobby leading to the inside. Matteo Ricci was the most prominent. There was also Xu Guang Qi, and Adam Schall. The guard came and drove us off, no viewing or photography allowed. Thus ended my search.
