Leaving Bai Di Chun at Dawn tr. By S L Kong (Class of 1953)
I left at dawn the castle town of Bai Di beneath colourful clouds
To sail round one thousand li of waters and canyons in a day
While monkeys on shore said adieus aloud
Their sad cries vanished as my skiff passed mountains away
may i submit my following rendition (that has been polished up by Andrew W.F.
Downstream to Jiangling (Homeward Bound)! Li Bai
In the midst of clouds all glowing, Baidi, I left you at dawn,
By evening I’ll be home at Jiangling, a thousand miles I’ve gone.
While on cliffs of the Yangtze Gorges, gibbons ceaselessly cry,
Ten thousand folds of mountains, my skiff has slipped them by!
