楓橋夜泊  (唐)張繼

月落烏啼霜滿天        江楓漁火對愁眠
姑蘇城外寒山寺        夜半鐘聲到客船

Mooring by Maple Bridge Overnight         江紹倫譯

The moon resigns amid crow cries in a snowy sky
Under lofty maple trees dimly lit river boats lie side by side
Cold Hill Temple stands outside the Gu Su city wall
Bells toll at midnight to break the stillness for boatmen at moor

  1. 【楓橋夜泊】 唐·張繼
    月落鳥啼霜滿天, 江風漁火對愁眠。
    姑蘇城外寒山寺, 夜半鐘聲到客船。

    Maple Bridge Night Mooring — Zhang Ji (733?-779)
    The moon sets and darkness is not allay’d.
    Startled, cawing crows their anger display;
    All skies are frosty flakes in disarray.
    Maples by the river faintly in sight
    And dots of fishermen’s flickering light
    Watch over lone traveller’s sleepless night.
    Yet, behold in the yonder dell —
    How contented does Hanshan Temple dwell
    Outside the walls of Gusu Citadel.
    (O, listen and O listen well!)
    At midnight, tolls of the monastery bell
    Reach my boat like an enlightening swell.

  2. hi,

    may i try simplifying the rendition in (purportedly) iambic pentameter with the original AAXA rhyme? thanks.

    Moon sets, ravens cry, snows veil all the sky;
    Sleepless, at faint maples, fish’ng lights stare I.
    Hansan Temple outside Gusu City —
    Mid-night: bell’s tolls reach trav’ller’s boat here tied.
