Yu Fong-ying \u4f59\u6643\u82f1 (WYK1961) recently started me to think about getting Chinese verse forms adapted for the English language as some worthy contribution to cross-cultural fertilization. Both the sonnet and the haiku have been successfully adapted into English from Italy and Japan, respectively.\u00a0 Maybe some Chinese verse forms too can be similarly adapted.<\/p>\n

I picked Li Bai’s best known 4-line poem \u591c\u601d<\/strong> as a first attempt at this adaptation.\u00a0 Over the Easter long weekend, with Fong-ying\u2019s\u00a0collaboration, we arrived at the version below to start the ball rolling for anyone who is interested in taking up this challenge.\u00a0 It does not have to be a translation.\u00a0 It can be a composition in the form of a 4-line pentasyllabic verse, \u4e94\u7edd (wujue<\/em>), preferrably in monosyllables and with the rhyme scheme of abcb, but any 4-line pentasyllabic verse will do.\u00a0\u00a0 A 4-line septasyllabic verse, \u4e03\u7edd (qijue<\/em>), \u00a0is fine too.\u00a0 Also see Fong-ying\u2019s wujue <\/em>English composition \u201cThis Place I Roam\u201d below.\u00a0 –YK Chan (WYK1965)<\/p>\n
