借物比德

            中華文化素來不看重邏輯的思辨和分析,思想家在提出他們的道德主張之時,不作嚴謹的界定,比較喜歡用特定概念的〝對應物〞來說清意義。

            高尚人格的對應物有許多,松柏是其中之一。孔子(前551~前479)觀察大自然的物象,從〝歲寒然後知松柏之後凋〞,領悟出君子的堅强人格。中華文化發展,在很長的一段時間內,思想家不但借助對樹木花草的觀察來思考自己的形象,更進一步以之為塑造自我形像的模楷。通過這種〝比德〞的方法,思想家放下單純的說理,不視松柏為類比的符號,而認之為人本質力量的象徵。

  1. After Joseph Needham’s query on the lack of later progress in science and technology, Qian Xuesen raised the question of why modern Chinese education could not locally produce outstanding scientists of international stature.

    RE: Your opening statement–“中華文化素來不看重邏輯的思辨和分析…”

    Could this tradition be viewed as an impediment to developing brilliant modern Chinese scientific minds indigenously? Could further globalization of Americanism change Qian’s impression?

  2. Scientific discovery dose not depend (solely) on logic and analysis. It requires more on holistic thinking and imagination, as well as the courage to go beyond the status quo. That’s why most great scientists are also poets and musicians.

  3. Sorry, you have not answered my question (pertaining to Chinese culture) by evading it to secondary factors or seemingly analogizing the problem to holistic medicine.

    My question is not on scientific discovery, sir.
