《樵歌子》《A Woodcutter Song》Wu Chen En

Watching a game of chess I drop into a timeless sphere
As a woodcutter I fell trees in spree
At the valley where clouds edge I stroll
Selling firewood I go
Laughing to echo the spirit of poet Tao
Deep in autumn the hill paths are still green
On a pine root pillow I lie to sleep under moonshine
Till dawn I wake up feeling fine

Up this old forest
I scale cliffs and cross ridges
To cut down withered creepers
Gathering enough to make up a load
I carry my goods to market singing
For three pints of rice in exchange
No bargaining
It is a fair pricing

I have no interest in using tricks to make gains
And care not to win or lose in a game
Leading a simple life my days and years extend long
In my encounters
Daoists and immortals gather
To expound the art of happiness as I quietly savour

《舟行》《On a Gliding Boat》

Where the river enters the sea white cranes frolic
The sun’s slanting rays render distant tree shadows vivid
Clouds over the distant village signal rains to pour
I recline on my boat to watch how a rainbow takes form

《天仙子》《Tune: A Fairy Song》

In my skiff home is wherever I float
Fearing not waves and mists ten thousand folds
I catch fishes casting lines and nets
No fatty sauce
Fish meat tastes best naturally
Together with my wife and child we eat happily

I sell what is to spare at the Chang An market place
To exchange for a good brew for intemperance
On the river in autumn I sleep in my straw shawl
Thundering in snores
With nothing to care for
Not glory or honour which I deplore

Village tavern banners feature white lotus brew
Roaring drums hurry sails green with willows
Young and fearless I roamed on all roads
Now I pine for my homeland long pavilions show

In late spring fishes thrive in swelling waters
Near the sea cranes brave winds in their flutters
To whom up the tower the flutist sings
Grieving with falling plums I listen in drunken sheen
