Visiting West Lake in Spring

Lone Hill north looks on the Jia Pavilion east
Beneath low clouds the lake water brims at ease
On the sun-warmed trees orioles compete to trill
With mud in beak to where goes the swallow
Seeing so many flowers my eyes are dazzled
On the short grass soft banks horse hooves show
How can I stroll the east bank enough I love so
Under green willow shades the White Sand Dyke glows

Tune: Eternal Pining

As the BianRiver slowly flows
So is the Si River chattily goes
They reach the ancient dock at Gua Zhou
The distant hills in the south mark my sorrows

My longings continue to show
So do my complaints endlessly go
They will cease whence my love returns to me
Now I stand alone on moonlit balcony

Recall the South

The wonders of southern country I so highly admire
Dawn by the river bank flower blooms burn like red fire
In spring the river surges water like gleaming sapphire
Can I not pine for the wonderful south I love

A Note to Liu Shi Jue

With my new brew mellow green
And my red-clay stove ready to beam
As this evening we will see snow
Would you drink with me to ward off cold

《To My Brothers While Sharing the Moon》  Bai Ju Yi (722-846)

At a time of war and famine our family house lies forlorn
Brothers and sisters have freed east or west hearts torn
Gardens and fields lay fallow long after the soldiers gone
Family members strayed on hinder roads drifting on

Memories of dear ones seem like geese lost on long journey
Lineal roots dispersed wide like autumn tumbling weeds
Whence we watch the moon under separate roofs with tears
Though far apart our love for one another will keep us near

《When Ill》Bai Ju Yi (722-846)

My bosom friends please worry not for me
Even when ill I strive to travel freely
With spirit high I do not rely on my feet
But ride on a carried chair or on a skiff
