On News of Victory North and South of the Big River    Du Fu (712-770)

Hearing the big news that we have recaptured the Northern Gate
I have my gown soaked wet with tears to welcome my new fate
No sorrowful emotion is seen in my wife’s face
I roll up my books to prepare for going home not a minute late

In old age I can still express my ecstasy singing and drinking
Heading home I am happy to be accompanied with spring
Through the Three Gorges from Ba to Wu I sail
Down to Xiangyang to Luoyang I’ll be home safe

North and south of my cottage runs a winding stream
Gulls come daily in flocks so keen
The footpath filled with fallen flowers have not been cleaned
My wicket door is open today in anticipation for your coming

Far from the market I can offer you only simple food
In place of rich wine let’s sample my homebrew if you so would
Should you wish to meet my good neighbours in glee
I’ll call them over the fence together we will drink for gaiety

Spring View     Du Fu (712-770)

Our motherland war-torn the hills and rivers keep
Towns in spring wild grass grow in deep
In grief tearing flowers pant
Parting birds cry frightened to no end

High on the mountains beacon fires are three months old
Any word from home is worth ten thousand gold
Scratching my head makes my hair thin
They hold not even a light hairpin

Up the Mountain                    Du Fu (712-770)

High sky and swift winds send gibbons wearily cry
O’er white sand in the clear river birds recurrently fly
In the boundless wood trees shed their leaves like showers
From the long river torrents roll forgetful of the hour
Ten thousand li from home I grieve this autumn my plight
Surviving lengthy illness I alone climb up this platform high
Through hard times my hair is turning white
Battling poverty I now must give up wine

Reflections In An Inn          Du Fu (712-770)

Short grass thrive on riverbanks cooled by breezes
Alone a tall mass stands on a boat in darkness
A sky decorated by low stars sets the plain wide
The moon bright heaves up the river’s rolling tide

My fame is not built by my writings at will
Retirement from public office is natural when old and ill
How free it feels doing little I wonder
Like a water bird between sky and land hovers

To My Ailing Horse   Du Fu (712-770)

You have followed my rein for so many years
Through snow and deep mountain passes we cheered
You have always trotted in good form where’er we go
Seeing you ill in your aging days I feel sorrow
Your coat and frame are not different from others your kind
‘Tis your loyalty to me that shines
This little gesture of appreciation is definitely not shallow
I’m moved to sing you my praise from my soul

Watching the Wilderness       Du Fu (712-770)

On this autumn day I see a boundless view
Layers of hills and trees loom in vivid hues
At a distance clean are the water and the sky
Hidden in deep mist a lone town stays from behind
Lingering leafs easily fall when swept by winds
Toward the mountain ranges a retiring sun plummets in
Why should a solitary crane returns to its nest late
When black craws have thronged the woods in haste

The Conscript March (selected part)  Du Fu (712-770)

Chariots rumble rumble
Horses grumble grumble
The conscripts march to the front to fight with arrow and bow
Parents and wives run along to say goodbye
Dust from their running blind the Senyuen Bridge out right
They wail and stamp their feet trying to halt the onward march
Their heart-rending cries strike even clouds which leave fast
A passer-by inquires what is happening
Conscripts reply that draft orders will be continuously in
Fifteen-year-olds are sent to guard the northern shore
By age forty they will be compelled to farm the wilderness on tour

Mt Tai Peak               Tu Fu (712-770)

A supreme peak you loom
Your greens sprawl over the states of Chi and Lu
You are the wonder of Nature’s feat so fine
Wielding ying and yang you have night and day defined

On your lap layers of clouds glide
Birds fly by you seen only with strained eyes
To ascend to your very top I must try
All other peaks will stand beneath feet of mine
