The Long March    by   Mao Zedong (Written in 1935) 江紹倫譯

The Red Army has no fear for the Long March trials
Leaguing ten thousand streams and hills is daily usual
Heavy gusts from the Five Ridges are but gentle breezes
And the grand Wumeng we tread like clay globules
The steep cliffs on the Jinsha is warmed by lapping waves
The Dadu iron-chain bridge is crossed with no regard for its cold
Mt. Min’s snows a thousand li are greeted in delight
The three troops march on victorious their spirits high

看万山红遍,层林尽染;

恰同学少年,风华正茂;

Changsha  by  Mao Zedong  (Written in 1925)         江紹倫譯
(Tune: Qin Garden Spring)

Alone I stand in the autumn cold
Turning north the Xiang River gently flows
Where the Orange Isle on behold

Ten thousand hills in crimson hue
Serial woods dyed in blazing red
Where blue waters reflect a crystal view
Hundreds of barges vie to get ahead

Eagles sour up the expanding sky
Fishes in the shallows happily glide
In this frigid world all creatures strive to be free
Brooding over this immensity
To the boundless land I ask
Who is in command of human destiny

Gathering here for reunion we a throng of peers
Vivid in memory are those crowded vibrant years
In youth we studied side by side
Our lives and aspirations flowering high
By our bookish insight and ambitions
We boldly cast all restraints aside
To wage new grand plans to build a better nation
Using torrid words to set people afire
We condemned those powerful lords to mere muck in demise

Do you remember
How reaching midstream we met the surging torrents
Waves overtook boats.
